Spring is just around the corner

After the long, dark nights of winter the re-emergence of colour is something we all look forward to.  Milder weather and longer days give you the opportunity to spend time outdoors and see the countryside burst back to life. Historically spring starts at the vernal equinox which usually occurs between the 19th and 21st of March. The equinoxes are the only days of the year when the earth's axis is not tilted, giving nearly equal hours of day and night on those days.

Woods are a great place to witness the joy of spring's arrival. From the first leaf buds bursting to the last bloom of bluebells, woods are a feast for the senses in springtime.  While you're there, branch out with one of our activity sheets, take photos of butterflies, flowers or birds and share your pictures on VisitWoods and tell us about your experience.   

There are so many spring myths and traditions to explore including the ancient Greek myth of Persephone who, returning from being trapped in the underworld, brings spring back to the world. And it isn't only the ancients who have been inspired by the season. Poets, writers and artists have all found inspiration in spring.
