Woodland Royalty

With the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations approaching we've found some great woods to visit - all fit for a king or queen.

Many UK woods have royal connections, intriguing regal links and are former royal hunting forests.

Top 5 royal woods to visit

Rockingham Forest  Rockingham Forest, Northamptonshire
One of the last remnants of this royal forest is Geddington Chase. Here two robbers, who had relieved Mary Queen of Scots of her valuables, made their escape and hid their treasure.
 Epping Forest Epping Forest, Essex
Home of The Great Standing which was commissioned by Henry VIII in 1543. The platform was refurbished for Elizabeth I in 1589 and is now known as the Queen Elizabeth Hunting Lodge.
Achray Forest Achray Forest, Stirling, Scotland
The Forestry Commission designated the park as a Forest Park to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth I in 1953.
 Savernake Forest Savernake Forest, Wiltshire
Henry VIII made many visits to Savernake as he was a keen deer-hunter. He also had a short stay here shortly after the execution of Queen Anne Boleyn in 1536.
 Hatfield Forest Hatfield Forest, Essex
Hatfield has been given away and taken back by the crown a few times. Notably though, Henry VIII beheaded the 3rd Duke of Buckingham to regain it and Elizabeth I granted it to Sir Richard Rich who then sold it.
