About the competition

The competition was set up to encourage people to add photos to any of the 11,500 woods held on our online woodland database.

The categories were: Forests and People, All Creatures Great and Small, Ancient Woods and Modern Wonders and Nature's Playground (under 14s category), with photos aiming to celebrate everything that made trees and woods special.

All the woods can be found on VisitWoods.

The judge's verdict

Of the winning entry, judge Simon King said: "This photograph gives a true sense of the beauty and embrace of mature woodland and its importance in harboring all life, including humanity."

Overall winner's reaction

Mr Chaplin described how he took his winning shot: "The picture was taken in Embley Wood in the north of Hampshire. I happened upon the wood really by accident after taking a wrong turn and wandering down a path to see if there was anything worth photographing. I was rewarded by discovering one of the most faultlessly beautiful bluebell woods I have ever seen"

Mr Chaplin has won vouchers worth £500 as well as a three night stay for two in a DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel.
