The Limestone Landscapes Partnership was set up to enhance and restore the unique landscape of the magnesian limestone plateau.
This area stretches from the rivers Tyne to Tees and from the coast to central Durham. Its limestone rocks and hidden coal seams support a diverse, and often unique variety of plants and animals. Woodlands form a large part of this landscape.
East Durham is one of the most wooded areas in England, yet it is also one of the most socially and economically disadvantaged areas. As well as protecting this area for the future, the Limestone Landscapes Project aims to inspire local people about this landscape and its rich wildlife and heritage.
The VisitWoods project will work alongside the Limestone Landscapes Partnership to promote the wonderful resource that local people have on their doorstep, many of which provide free opportunities for health and leisure.
A VisitWoods outreach officer is based in the East Durham area to promote the benefits of woods. They will work with local schools and community groups to inspire people about their local environment using VisitWoods.org.uk and by leading woodland activities.
