Planting 350 acres of new woodland as part of Durham Jubilee Woods
CDENT (County Durham Environmental Trust) have donated £350,000 towards creating new woodland across County Durham as part of the Jubilee Woods Project. Planting will take place all over the County from a few hundred trees planted on school grounds to thousands of trees planted to create new areas of woodland freely accessible for everyone to enjoy. Jubilee Woods across County Durham will truly be at the very pinnacle of our nationwide programme.
Working in partnership with Durham County Council, who own the land that will be planted, and the Forestry Commission, eight Jubilee Woods and two fantastic Diamond Woods, of over 60 acres each, will be created resulting in a magnificent 200,000 trees being planted and 350 acres of new woodland. So when the cake and bunting have gone, County Durham will have new trees and woods, providing homes for wildlife and wonderful places for people to visit.
CDENT, which is now in its last year of operation, chose Jubilee Woods for its final project because of the prospect of a significant and lasting legacy. The success of the Woodland Trust in delivering previous projects totalling around one million pounds of CDENT funding was also a key factor.
CDENT was formed in 1997 to use the Government’s Landfill Communities Fund for the benefit of the environment and the people in the local area. CDENT has used funds donated by Premier Waste Management for this purpose and has allocated over £12 million of funding to projects since 1997.
